Abstract: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a very sensitive issue and it is controversial within the scientifc community as well as in the Aboriginal and mainstream communities. The Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) was invited to put together a consortium to conduct an awareness-raising project for Victorian Aboriginal communities. The scope of the project was to research the level of awareness in Victorian Aboriginal communities about the health effects associated with drinking alcohol during pregnancy, and to develop culturally appropriate resources for increasing awareness amongst health service providers and community members.
