Old Problem - New Solutions: HealthConnect System Architecture for Information Delivery

HIC 2003 RACGP12CC [combined conference]: Proceedings

Abstract: The primary business problem that the Commonwealth HealthConnect initiative aims to address is the need to provide access, for consumers and providers, to "selected / simple / summary / relevant information relating to health status, treatment and events of individuals at the time of care to assist decision making" [HCON, 2002]. The range and complexity of issues, implied in this statement, cannot be underestimated. This paper presents and describes a practical HealthConnect System Architecture, based on established and emerging technologies and standards, which will address the key elements of the HealthConnect Business Architecture. The system, based on this architecture, will be flexible, able to be deployed incrementally, address real-time access to disparate information repositories, minimises ownership and control issues, minimises individual identification issues, be largely self-maintaining and capable of delivering appropriate health status information, in a timely and secure manner, to consumers and practitioners.
