'God Is Love': The Literography of Leonid Denysenko

Australasian Catholic Record, The
Volume 86 Issue 1 (Jan 2009)

Abstract: Discusses 'God is Love', written by the hand of the Australian Ukrainian Leonid Denysenko. This widely known and inspirational 'literograph' represents a modern form of religious art which draws upon the well-established principles of the visual language of iconography. This article seeks to explain the spiritual truth conveyed in 'God is Love'; it does so in three parts. The first briefly describes the visual language of iconography. The second outlines the life and work of Leonid Denysenko, who pioneered 'literography', a new form of religious art based upon the principles of iconographic language. Finally, the article considers the application of literography in Denysenko's 'God is Love'.
