Edward Dobson and the Mass Concrete Gravity Dam on Stony Creek for the Geelong Water Supply

9th National Conference on Engineering Heritage: Proceedings

Abstract: The Lower Stony Creek Reservoir north of Geelong, Victoria, has been recognised as Australia's first mass concrete gravity dam. Its significance as the third such dam built in modern times is not so well known. Also, Portland cement was used for the concrete, and the dam was the first application of this material in a large exposed structure constructed by a British civil engineer. It may well have the further distinction of being the first gravity dam designed on the principles of stability with economy developed by Professor W. J. M. Rankine following the work of the French engineers De Sazilly, Graeff and Delocre. This paper looks at the dam and the engineer responsible for its construction, William Dobson. It examines his background, training and experience, his innovation in using Portland cement for the concrete in the dam, and his construction techniques which produced a sound structure still in good condition after 125 years.
