Claiming My Landscapes through Poetry

Island
Issue 123 (Summer 2010)

Abstract: It was quite a few years ago that I heard the Sydney poet Deb Westbury lamenting the fact that our children were more likely to know the names of foreign companies than the names of plant species in local bush land or the birds in their backyards. This, she argued, is why poetry matters. We name what we care about.
