Erase the words, change the language and you can control the debate and rewrite history

Idiom
Volume 48 Issue 2 (2012)

Abstract: Language is power; power for influencing society, shifting reality, rewriting history, undermining perspectives and establishing solidarity. One can manipulate language for the purpose of gaining and maintaining authority or employ disguising and distorting expressions to veil the truth. Nonetheless, language too can be utilised as a tool to promote equality, to build allegiance and to endorse unity in our society. With careful selection of and modification to language, any one user has the power to control the debate and rewrite history.
