Abstract: The Aged and Community Care Informatics Conference 2004 provided an important milestone for identifying the methods and technologies of the information sciences applicable to problem solving and decision making relevant to quality care of the frail aged and of the ageing populations. The conference examined government strategies, in Australia and overseas, for defining the evolving role of electronic information management in aged care. It provided an opportunity to identify the significant work that is already in place to develop systems relevant to the needs of all practitioners encompassed by the aged care framework. The conference importantly started a debate in Australia on the role and shape of the electronic health record in supporting the wellness needs of an ageing population and the long term care needs of frail older people.
