Abstract: A study which focusses on Palmer's development as a public voice, as a woman, as a writer, and as an Australian; through the examination of her psycho-sexual and intellectual development. For a fuller understanding of Palmer's successes, failures and conflicts; her politics must be seen seen in relation to her personal life and her persona in relation to her career as a writer. Her growth and achievements can be read against the constraints of colonial society, historical changes in Australia, of federation and suffrage, of women's entry in the workplace, and changes in the nature of the family.
